Sustainable Volunteer Opportunities This Holiday Season

Hey Friends,

Give the gift of giving back to your community this Holiday Season! The Shapiro Real Estate Group wants to share a few of our favorite volunteer opportunities for this year.

Zilker Park Christmas Tree Recycling

Don’t throw away your Christmas tree; give it another life by recycling it at Zilker Park! All trees will be converted to mulch that can then be picked up by area residents in mid January. Volunteer shifts will be from 10am – 12pm or 12pm – 2pm each day of the event. We suggest that you dress according to the weather and bring a water bottle and a pair of work gloves if you have them available. The city of Austin will provide T-shirts, snacks, and warm drinks for volunteers. This year, the age limit on volunteers is 18 and above. RSVP to volunteer by contacting Meredith Gauthier at [email protected] with your desired shift date and time. Learn more here.

Volunteer Dates are:

  • Saturday, Dec. 28, 2019
  • Sunday, Dec. 29, 2019
  • Saturday, Jan. 4, 2020
  • Sunday, Jan. 5, 2020

Keep Austin Beautiful – Hwy 360 Cleanup

Removing the left-over decorations is a priority for Keep Austin Beautiful due to the concern for the surrounding environment. The festive accessories pose a potential threat to wildlife that may mistake the ornaments for food and the Bull Creek watershed as the items come loose and wash into the nearby creek. For any decorations that remain after the holidays, Keep Austin Beautiful will be holding its annual post-holiday cleanup on Saturday, January 11th, 2020 from 9:00am to 12:00pm. This year, Keep Austin Beautiful is recruiting 100 volunteers to assist in the post-holiday cleanup. Austinites are invited to volunteer by registering here by January 10th. Coffee & hot chocolate will be available for volunteers at the meeting spot! All supplies will be provided.

KeepAustinFed

This is more of an ongoing volunteer opportunity. You must take a food handling certification course online and attend a Saturday training workshop – but don’t let that deter you for this awesome cause! You’ll be running surplus food from various locations (hotels, restaurants, grocery stores) to communities who really need it, all the while keeping good food out of landfills. It’s a win for everyone! Learn more here.
